PAINTING

14-1 GENERAL

Painting of all structural steel, box lids, and grates shall be required as herein outlined. Unless otherwise specified, one shop or prime coat and one finish coat of paint will be required with a minimum dry film thickness of 1 1/2 mils per coat. The paint finish coat shall be light gray unless specified otherwise.

14-2 STRUCTURAL STEEL

14-2.1 SURFACE PREPARATION. All surfaces to be coated shall be sandblasted to a commercial grade.

All surfaces must be coated with one coat of primer the same day as sandblasting.

14-2.2 PAINT SYSTEM. Apply all coatings by brush or roller or spray in strict accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.

(1) Prime coat shall be red lead enamel.

(2) Finish coat shall be enamel.

Mixing and thinning shall be in strict accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.

14-3 BOX LIDS AND GRATES

14-3.1 SURFACE PREPARATION. All surfaces to be coated shall be sandblasted to a commercial grade.

All surfaces must be coated with one coat of primer the same day as sandblasting.

14-3.2 PAINT SYSTEM. Apply all coatings by brush, roller, or spray in strict accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.

(1) Prime coat shall be red lead heavy-duty epoxy.

(2) Finish coat shall be heavy-duty epoxy.

Mixing and thinning of the above products shall be in strict accordance with manufacturer’s instructions.

14-4 APPLICATION

Paint shall be applied only when all of the following conditions are met:

(1) The air temperature is above 50 degrees F.

(2) The surface temperature of the material to be painted is between 40 degrees F. and 100 degrees F.

(3) The surface to be painted is clean and dry.

Material painted under cover in damp or cold weather shall remain covered until dry or until weather conditions improve so as to permit its exposure in the open.

Painting shall be done in a neat and workmanlike manner. Paint shall be applied with hand brushes or by spraying smoothly and uniformly so that no excess paint will collect at any point.

The finish shall be uniform in appearance and cover. Total exterior system dry film thickness shall not be less than 3.0 mills.
