JUSTICE COURT JUDGE
Gary L. Johnson
The Justice Court Judge presides over the Municipal Court for the City of Kanab. The jurisdiction of the Court is for class B & C misdemeanors, as well as infractions that occur within the city limits of Kanab. The Kanab City Justice Court also has jurisdiction to hear civil cases (small claims) with a monetary limit of $7500.00. Jurisdiction is limited to persons eighteen years of age and older except in matters of traffic offenses when the defendant is sixteen years of age or older. The Court works independently of other branches of government and is responsible to ensure the rights of all parties are protected. The Justice Court Judge is also responsible for the budget and general workings of the judicial department of Kanab City.
Judge Johnson, who currently presides over the Court, has been sitting as Judge for the Court for just over six years. During that time Judge Johnson has completed both level one and level two of the Utah State Judicial Institute, which are year long courses taught by University of Utah Law Professors. He has also gone to Reno, Nevada and completed Courses at the National Judicial College as well as the yearly Judges Conferences in April of each year. Judge Johnson currently is serving his second term as a member of the State Board of Justice Court Judges and was recently appointed to serve as vice chair of the board. Other responsibilities as a member of the state board are chairman of the board.s communication committee as well as a member of the board.s executive committee which is heavily involved in legislative issues during each legislative session.
